Airflow Cycle and Covid-19

Updates about Covid-19 and a better airflow cycle to keep workers safer will probably be an ongoing topic for quite some time. We learn and we adjust, just like most things in life. We learn new information and take the necessary steps to better ourselves. Air filtration has always been a key part to improving indoor air quality. But, is filtering recirculated air enough to keep the coronavirus from spreading throughout a building? A ventilation system is being used more so to help dilute inside air with air from the outside.

Spread of Covid-19 in a Closed Airflow Cycle

Because the spread of Covid-19 could be recirculated around the building, you may want to use a setup that allows more outside are to come into the building. This will help dilute the indoor air with fresh outdoor air. Having a closed airflow cycle may spread the virus throughout a building. So, although having a quality air filtration system can help limit the spread, introducing fresh, outside air may help lower the spread even more.

A take on an air filtration setup is shown in the image above. Some places are having their air unit installed behind a wall versus up above. Take a look at the image shown. Clean air is being pushed out from the top. The return are is being sucked in from the bottom as particles make their way down. This is then cycled through and mixed with fresh air from outside to help dilute the contaminated indoor air. Then, the return air and outside air goes through the filtration process shown.

Filtration System Inside And Air Handler Unit

On top of introducing more outside air into the airflow cylce, it is important to have quality filters in place. A good air filtration system can help filter out more particles. In air unit shown above, it has different steps the contaminated air must go through before it’s used. The pre-filter and final filter are used to filter out particles from the air. UV lighting is in place to kill germs in the air stream. Also, the carbon air filter is used to filter out odors. Finally, the filtered air is sent out as clean air and pushed throughout the building.

Taking Care Of Your Air Handler Unit

On top of having a great filtration and ventilation system in place, a good maintenance plan is almost equally as important. These filters should be changed out in a timely manner to avoid build-up, which in turn, will lower efficiency and cause premature failure. We supply quality air filters, from pre-filters to final filters, HEPA filters to custom cut filter media, and also, carbon filter media.
